Today we said goodbye to our beloved hotel in downtown Santiago. We flew into the busy port town of Puerto Montt, named after Manuel Montt, the President of Chile between 1851 and 1861. After a leisurely drive through the countryside, we arrived at a quaint little restaurant overlooking a lake. We dined on local fish and were entertained by the majestic views of the mountains and lake. Southern Chile abounds with spectacular scenery, mesmerizing alpine lakes and charming German-inspired villages. After lunch we again drove through the countryside, past active volcanoes and small dairy farms. We arrived in Puerto Varas, the "city of roses" located on the shore of Lake Llanquihue. One of the largest lakes in in South America, it is well known for its German traditions and the natural environment. Our hotel room looks out on two beautiful snow capped mountains.
