Buenos Aires

Today we departed the mountains of Bariloche and flew to the "Paris of South America" recognized for its strong European architecture, culture and wide tree lined avenues. We lunched at Tortoni, an art nouveau landmark cafe, the oldest in the city. We visited the city's beautiful main plaza, the Plaza de Mayo, the hub of Buenos Aires around which the city was built. Surrounding the plaza is the Cabido, the Metropolitan Cathedral and Casa Rosado (the "Pink House") o Government house - its balcony was made famous by Evita Peron. Popular legend states that the color pink was chosen by President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento to defuse political tensions by mixing red and white colors for the country's opposing political parties. An alternative explanation suggests that the original paint contained cow's blood to prevent damage from the effects of humidity.
